Yesterday was mothers day and so in honor of all the mothers out there, on two legs and on four I am going to tell you a little bit about some very different animal mothers. Dogs adopting lions, whales adopting dolphins, and even a lion adopting an antelope.
Once again, the middle of the week has rolled around and I find my self having an abysmally low level of motivation as my finals inch ever closer. So what better way to distract myself than with dolphin sex! Dolphins are known for getting frisky quite often, because everyone knows that darlin’ it’s better down where it’s wetter, take it from me!
Biruté M. F. Galdikas was born to parents leaving Lithuania at the end of WWII for greener pastures in Canada. She was raised in Toronto in an ever-growing Baltic community. She states, “because of my mother’s tales and my parent’s fondness for nature, I became that unlikely combination of bookworm and nature lover”(39, Reflections of Eden). While growing up in Canada she often explored in the woods behind her home, envisioning herself becoming a great adventurer like the Man in the Yellow Hat from Curious George a favorite book form her childhood.
Seahorse sex is just plain weird. They’re one of the only animals where the male get pregnant.
Of a chimpanzee researcher at Gombe National Park. Does Gombe sound familiar to you?? Well, if not, it should. Gombe is where Jane Goodall began her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees, or Pan troglodytes.
Happy world tapir day! That’s right, those adorable little swimming elephant cows have their own day. Tapirs are pretty awesome animals, I particularly enjoy their color change as they grow up.
Happy belated world penguin day! Yeah, yeah, yeah I’m a day late but my crippling migraine kept me off the internet last night. Penguins are amazing! But many people are very misinformed about penguins. They imagine a bunch of birds living in the Antarctic being eaten by seals and polar bears. Wrong!

Sloths seem to be all the rage lately and from the point of a (former/future) zookeeper I can say that I am less than impressed. But this sloth is pretty stinking cute.
The Kakapo is the world’s rarest parrot. It also takes the cake for the strangest, being flightless and nocturnal. Researchers caught some very… ahem… unusual footage of the fearless bird:
