Today I wandered into a used bookstore and came out with several exciting finds. However, I’m only going to be talking about one: “The Great Naturalists” by Thames and Hudson which features predominantly male naturalists, as most accounts of any science pre-20th century tend to do. But hidden in the mini-biographies were two fantastic women: Maria Sibylla Merian and Mary Anning.
I recently had the privilege of filming a public service announcement for Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas. It is the largest animal sanctuary in the U.S. and is made up of 3,010 acres and is home to over 1,000 animals. It is a beautiful place and I believe that ever animal facility should look to them for how animals should be housed and treated. This PSA was filmed and edited by me, and I do have the rights to the music. A great thanks to BBR and HSUS for helping out so much. This was made for a journalism class I am currently taking at SMU.
Sloths seem to be all the rage lately and from the point of a (former/future) zookeeper I can say that I am less than impressed. But this sloth is pretty stinking cute.
The Kakapo is the world’s rarest parrot. It also takes the cake for the strangest, being flightless and nocturnal. Researchers caught some very… ahem… unusual footage of the fearless bird:
