After 13 years of searching, setting up over 1,500 camera traps, baited traps the Formosan clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa brachyura) has been declared extinct. This has been suspected for some time, though scientists still held out hope, even though there has not been a confirmed sighting in over 30 years.
I’m an avid follower of National Geographic, and although I love their magazine, I am often disappointed with the frequency of animal related news posts on their website. However, their photography does not disappoint, and I think this is one of my favorites.
Normally this would be horrible news, but these traps are animal friendly. Are any traps animal friendly, you may ask? Well yes! Camera traps! 225 camera traps have been set up over 390 square miles in hopes to get a sense of how the Serengeti functions as an ecosystem without humans being present.

Happy world lion day! While doing my routine daily scroll through National Geographic’s website I came across something new. Something titled The Serengeti Lion. This website is dedicated to photos, videos, and sound bytes from the Vumbi pride.
If you all read my post ‘canine distemper ruins lives’ you might find it interesting to note that National Geographic just wrote an article about a CDV breakout in the tiger population in Russia.
I was sitting in my parents room watching animal planet when I watched a group of volunteers rescue fourteen cougars, five lions and one tiger from a neglectful home in Poetry, Texas. The floors were covered in feces and many of the cats were without water and on the verge of starvation, then these people came in in their lime green shirts and took them and gave them a better home.
Sloths seem to be all the rage lately and from the point of a (former/future) zookeeper I can say that I am less than impressed. But this sloth is pretty stinking cute.
