Your chocolate is no good. Not just because its sugary, but because most chocolate contains something called palm oil. In the past twenty years 90% of orangutan habitat has been destroyed to make way for palm oil plantations
According to Birute Galdikas’ organization Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) between 6 and 12 orangutans die a day due to palm oil. People actually have the jobs of being ‘exterminators’ and killing the orangutans that come onto the plantations. It is guessed that over 300 football fields worth of rainforest are destroyed everyday in Indonesia and Malaysia.
Many mothers are also killed so that their young may be sold into the pet trade. This next photo is of a pregnant orangutan that has scampered up a lone tree in a palm oil plantation to hide from humans. She is about to be darted and taken to a preserve away from the plantations. That’s really depressing 😦 I love chocolate!
